Black’s Martial Arts Academy was established in 1995 by Master Thomas Black. While the school began in Du Quoin, it was moved to Carbondale in 2000. In 2004, the school moved to its present location in Bowen Gym. The school is located in the 12,000 square foot south east wing of Bowen Gym. It has a fully padded floor and a retail shop.
Our students have the opportunity to compete in tournaments at state, national, and international levels. Each summer our school hosts the Alliance Grand Nationals in Bowen Gym.
We offer day camps during school breaks, the summer months, and for tournament training. These camps are open to children and adults. Private lessons can be scheduled with Master Black.
Dr. Thomas Black, 10th Dan, is the owner and master instructor of Black’s Martial Arts Academy. He is certified through the Kukkiwon, USNTF, and the Alliance. All of the school’s instructors are certified black belts.

November Schedule:
- Tae Kwon Do Classes are Monday - Thursday, beginning at 5:30p - 6:30p and and 6:30p - 7:30p.
- Group Training is Friday nights, and will be announced weekly.
- Tournament Team Training is Saturday 12:30p - 2:30p, but availability is announced weekly.
- Gumdo is being taught on Thursday nights, 5:30p - 6:30p.
- Pee Wee Classes are on Saturdays from 11:30a to Noon.
There will be no classes Thursday, November 26 through Saturday, November 28 due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
There will be no classes Thursday, December 24 through Saturday, December 26 due to the Christmas holiday.
There will be no classes Thursday, December 31 through Saturday, January 2 due to the New Year's holiday.
